Search Engine Optimisation

SEO or search engine optimisation is a term that can often put dread into the hearts of many a strong person. Why? Well, it's often seen as a 'dark art' and something that only the experienced geek has privileged access to. SEO is essential for any website that wants to monetise and get a return on their investment online. It's not complicated and, in fact, it's a simple process. Simple, yet it takes time. It's a process that always works but as the Search Engines are constantly changing their methods for ranking websites, so it affects what happens to your website. You can boost the performance of your website through PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns such as Google Adwords but it's not always necessary.

Is it possible to do SEO yourself?

Of course, search engine optimisation is something you can do yourself but if all those techical and geekie terms such as 'keyword analysis', 'Google PageRank' and 'KEI' makes your head spin, then you'll find it much easier to hire a specialist or company to do it all for you.

We've been involved in optimising websites for over 10 years now and the entire process of search engine optimisation has changed minimally since the early days, albiet it's now more indepth. So we've outlined below the basic strategy for any website to achieve more traffic naturally and also to make steady progress online.

The process of Search Engine Optimisation

To put it simply, SEO is the process of optimising your website to gain the maximum amount of traffic (that's visitors to your website) via the search engines. These search engines and 'crawlers' read only the text content of your website and uses that information to rank your website when someone searches for a particular term on their search engine. The goal is to achieve a top ten listing (i.e. usually the first page of the search results) for the required search term or 'keyword phrase'.

What search engines to focus on?

Although there are 3 main search engines; Google, MSN and Yahoo, to keep things simple it's best to focus on Google. Achieving a top ranking on Google usually means the other major search engines follow suit as the way they rank websites are quite similar.

SEO is really nothing more than another form of marketing and it consists of the following steps:

  • Choose your Keywords or Keyword Phrases
  • Optimise your web pages for your chosen keywords
  • Develop link building relationships
  • Build relationships through Social Networking
  • Keep your website up-to-date and add new content regularly

These 5 simple steps are all it takes to get your website ranking well in the search engines. Of course, each step involves work which you can either do yourself or hire someone to do it for you.
